Our Past

Nurturing Stage

Back in 1975, when Sister Hu, a paralytic, moved to Taman Jurong, the elders of Church of Singapore (Marine Parade) decided to start a weekly Sunday Holy Communion Service in her home to enable her to continue to partake of the Holy Communion.

The group attending the service remained at about ten to twenty persons per meeting. Out of this group of people, only a handful lived in the Jurong area; the others were supporters from Church of Singapore (Marine Parade).

Beginning Stage

The elders of Church of Singapore recognised that God was doing a wonderful work in Jurong and so, during the 1980 Leadership Retreat they decided to set up a branch Church in Jurong the following year. The elders then requested brothers and sisters from its two Home fellowships in the western part of Singapore to support the branch. They were the Telok Blangah Homefellowship and the Rumah Tinggi Homefellowship. Together with the other two Homefellowships in the Jurong area, these four Homefellowships became the pillars of the Jurong Branch Church.

A few days before the first service of Church of Singapore (Jurong), Sister Hu went to be with the Lord. The Church believed that it as God's indication to the members that the Church was entering into a new stage of development. The very first Sunday service was held on, January 4, 1981, at the Jurong Town Hall (JTC) Theatre. The membership of the branch Church was about 60 people. With the leading of the Lord, Brother Song Meng Liang came out to serve full-time as a Pastor and Elder Tony Lim was the Church Adviser. We truly want to praise God for His Faithfulness. After three and a half years, the membership increased to 200.

Molding Stage

After the euphoria of this tremendous beginning, the painful process of molding and refining began. In mid-1984, the authorities of JTC terminated the rental of their premises for the Church. In the nick of time, God provided another venue for our weekly services; St. Andrew's Junior College. However, the change in the time of worship to the afternoon resulted in a 20% drop in membership.

Growing Stage

The year 1988 was a turning point in the history of our Church. Following the approval of our registration as an independent Church in late 1987, the last Annual General Meeting with the Church of Singapore (Marine Parade) was held on January 16, 1988. During this meeting, the independence of Church of Singapore (Jurong) was announced. It was at this time that God brought us back to the JTC Auditorium and the Sunday worship services reverted to the morning. The membership grew from 270 to 400 in the beginning of 1990. The Church also responded to the government's call to start a childcare centre at Bukit Panjang.

In 1990, we shifted to Anglo Chinese School (121 Dover Road) where we had a bigger auditorium for our Sunday morning worship service. The membership increased to 700 in 1998. In November 1990, God brought our attention to a piece of land at 485 Pasir Panjang Road. The land was about 37,900 sq. ft. and was available at the cost of $3.55 million. After much considerations and prayer, the leaders decided to stretch their faith beyond the apparent obstacles and purchase the land. The Church leaders also approached the relevant authorities to apply for a change in use for religious purposes after we had bought the property. However, the Church, failed to obtain approval after repeated attempts. It was then decided to sell the land and purchase another property that allowed for religious purposes so that the Church could have its own place of worship.

On 24 January 1995, we successfully completed the sale of the property.

Developing Stage

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! He had prepared a beautiful piece of land at the foot of Bukit Timah Hill (2B Hindhede Road) for the Church.

In front of it is a state land which we have also purchased from the Land Office.

The Church building now stands on these two pieces of lands that cover about 20,000 sq. ft.
