One Commandment, One Commission
With every new year, we should, “forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil 3:13-14).
Our Lord Jesus only gave us one commandment – He wants us to
[ Love one another ]
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34-35).
There are 10 worship services in our church; additionally there are 4 smaller foreign language services. Different services cater to different age groups, languages, cultures, backgrounds, and countries of origin. This is where we need to be “diligent” in obeying our Lord’s command, to learn to love one another, accept each other, look after each other, and care for one another. This is because we are one body, there is only one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father (Eph 4:4-5).
When we love one another, God is glorified (John 17:20-26), the world recognizes that we are His disciples, and the church will be blessed by God and grows … because the greatest is love (1 Cor 13:13).
Therefore, let us be “diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph 4:1-3).
Our Lord Jesus only gave us one commission – He wants us to
[ Make disciples of all the nations ]
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matt 28:19-20).
The gospel is the power of God (Rom 1:16); woe is upon us, if we do not preach the gospel (1 Cor 9:16). Paul said, “If I do this voluntarily, I have a reward” (1 Cor 9:17). Let our church be a church which is “diligent” to preach the gospel, because the Lord has promised that if we “make disciples of all the nations”, then He will be “with us always, even to the end of the age”. I wish that every member in the church, every cell group and every service, will make evangelism the primary responsibility and work. We want to preach the gospel in Singapore, South-East Asia, and all parts of Asia. This is the main reason for the existence of our church.
May the year 2011 be a year in which our church reaches “forward to what lies ahead”. As we are “diligent” to obey our Lord’s command and to accomplish His mission, God’s glory will definitely be manifested among us (John 11:40), signs and wonders will follow after us (Mark 16:17-20), and we will be
